Homelessness results from a complex set of circumstances and about one-third to half of all homeless individuals suffer from a treatable neuro-biological brain disorder. About 10% commit suicide every year. There is also a relationship between addiction disorders and homelessness. There continues to be disturbing obstacles to treatment for homeless persons.
A study of communities across the nation reveals gaps in services in all communities in the important stages of treatment and recovery. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Report, most homeless persons with mental illness do not need to be institutionalized, but can live in the community with the appropriate supportive housing options. However, many mentally ill homeless people are unable to obtain access to supportive housing and other treatment services. The services badly needed include case management, housing and treatment.

It appears in behavior, language, attitude, and tone of voice.
It hurts, punishes, and diminishes people.
It harms and undermines all relationships.
